REVIEW: Hiss Golden Messenger - Heart Like A Levee

Hiss Golden Messenger
Heart Like A Levee

Heart Like A Levee is North Carolina based singer-songwriter MC Taylor’s sixth full-length record under the moniker Hiss Golden Messenger and quite possibly his best yet.  Taylor has always had a penchant for blending genres - drawing from country, soul, folk and blues to shape his signature Americana sound, but never before has it gelled as cohesively as here.  Opener “Biloxi”, with its bouncy alt-country groove, picks up where the groups 2014 release Lateness Of Dancers left off.  But, by the time the horn section of “Tell Her I’m Just Dancing” hits it’s evident Taylor and company are on to the next thing.  Songs such as the title track and “Cracked Window” are soulful acoustic numbers, while “Like A Mirror Loves A Hammer”, an upbeat funk driven stomp, and “As The Crow Flies” draw from classic R&B and blues. Throughout Levee Taylor’s backing band steps up to the plate, utilizing different instrumentation to compliment the songwriter’s unique style.  Each song stands with a life of it’s own while simultaneously playing it’s role in the greater whole.  With Heart Like A Levee Hiss Golden Messenger have crafted a record that sounds as familiar as it does fresh, and one that is sure to be enjoyed for years to come.
