1. Withstand – Eyes To Guide Them - …And Anger Was A Warm Place To Hide (1997) Withstand are my favorite band from Albany. I think I said that on another one of these, but seriously they were awesome. No one else sounded like them. Albany’s hardcore scene had a distinctly metal feel to it that never quite fit into the overall development of metalcore that was happening up and down the east coast. Withstand would shift from simple power chord grooves to intricate metal riffing and back like it was nothing, and vocalist Roger Zalucky had a totally original melodic yell that matched it perfectly. PLAYLIST: Plaguelist #18: It Has Been One Year Since I Have Seen Live Music

1. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and The Picket Line – Death To Everyone – Funtown Comedown (2009) (0:00) March 11, 2020 marks the last time I was at a live music event. I am someone who went to see some type of music on a nearly weekly basis, so it has been a pretty different year for me. That’s why I started doing these playlist things in the first place. But that final show was Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, and things were already pretty weird at the time. Unbeknownst to us, the shutdown was mere days away, but there was already a strangeness in the air. The show was poorly attended and awkwardly quiet, with the artists addressing the uncertainty of the rest of their tour dates. I can’t remember if they played this song or not, but it’s one of my favorites. The original version comes from the essential Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy album, I See A Darkness , but here we have a reimagined version played live with a bluegrass band backing him. 2. REVIEW: The Damned Things - High Crimes

The Damned Things High Crimes ---originally published on Lambgoat --- More often than not, "supergroups" fail to live up to expectations. Whether it's unrealized potential or an abundance of hype, the coalescing of individually established musicians tends to fall short. The resulting projects frequently feel bland, forced and forgettable. The Damned Things' first full length, Ironiclast suffered this very fate. Featuring seminal thrasher Scott Ian of Anthrax, Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die, and emo-pop rockers Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy fame (to be fair, both Trohman and Hurley cut their teeth in hardcore bands), the album offered energetic, fun rock and roll that never quite locked into anything memorable. The songs were full of promise, but ultimately never delivered.
