Remember in the early days of underground music websites when they would have end of year lists from cool people in bands? I used to go through the Hydra Head one and check out everything that everyone listed. Well, this is like that, but with people that I know. The guidelines were simple: genre be damned, anything goes. I highly recommend that you take some time and give these a shot. Tons of links here. I also put together a playlist of all of these—at least, the ones that I could—on Tidal for myself, which is available here for anyone that uses that service and wants to listen as they read.

***( click here if player above doesn't load )*** 1. Stephen Brodsky – Flower In A Rocket – Static Intellect (2002) Static Intellect is an album that technically doesn’t exist. It actually has a catalog number with the now mostly defunct Hydrahead Records (HH666-53) and was supposed to be released in 2002 – it still has not been. But in the early days of file sharing, a bootlegged copy surfaced on the Internet. The quality isn’t great and I remember hearing rumors that it was actually ripped from a cassette, so it’s a little murky sounding (a couple tracks did actually receive high quality releases on comps and splits), but the songs shine through the low fidelity as a special period in Brodsky’s career. It places his main band Cave In (see: the forthcoming Plaguelist #3) somewhere between their experimental Cosmic Rock classic Jupiter and the Alternative stylings of their major label released Antenna . 40 Watt Sun Wider than the Sky originally published on Lambgoat 40 Watt Sun’s Patrick Walker wants you to know that he doesn’t play doom metal. Sure, his ultra minimalist approach has always been rooted in the genre, but even at its heaviest Walker’s songs have always borne qualities more akin to singer-songwriter material. Watching From A Distance , the hauntingly beautiful opus of his former group Warning, has garnered legendary status for its starkly personal and emotional songs. Having laid Warning to rest after it’s release, Walker’s 40 Watt Sun debut, The Inside Room grew upon that foundation, utilizing the songwriters incomparable croon and penchant for dreary melodies, all the while exploring new atmospheres with a hint of acoustic instrumentation.
